Meet Milena! Milena was christened in the Catholic church this fall wearing the Penelope Christening Gown & Bonnet Set. She also wore a few of the matching accessories such as the Penelope Sweater and Penelope Lace Booties. Milena's mom, Florangel, was kind to share gorgeous photos from Milena's christening ceremony and from the christening celebration, as well answer a few questions we asked. It was so wonderful to hear about Milena's special day and how she was surround by so many close friends and family. We hope you enjoy Milena's Christening Story!
What did you like about the Penelope Christening Gown?
The Penelope Christening Gown is gorgeous. It was exactly what I was looking for. I want to start a tradition with my children so the gown would be passed down to their daughters and so on, and the Penelope Gown is perfect for that.
Before you started looking for a christening outfit for Milena, did you already have a design or color in mind that you wanted? Did your church have any requirements for the christening outfit, such as specific color?
I wanted an off white gown with lace. I wanted it to look like it has been in my family for generations. The church did not have any requirements for the outfit.
What do you plan to do with Milena's christening gown now that the event is over?
I plan on safely tucking it away in the keepsake garment bag for my grandchildren.
How old was Milena on her christening day? Was there a reason you chose to christen them at this age?
Milena was seven months old at the time. We live in Massachusetts so we wanted the event while the weather was still nice. We figured early Fall to make it easier for family and friends to travel. Milena's family and friends on her father's side reside in New York. I also have cousins that flew out from Florida and early October seemed like the perfect time.
How far in advance did you start planning her christening event?
I began planning the event in July and trying to figure out what we wanted to do. My boyfriend attended Boston College for undergrad and law school, so he wanted her baptized at the St. Ignatius Church at Boston College in Newton. The church is beautiful and he wanted to tie his daughter to the years and memories he created at BC. It was beautiful to see his friends from BC attend after not seeing them for a few years. The next step was the outfit, and I knew exactly what I wanted but couldn't find the dress in any of the stores until I searched online and came up with your website. That was a God send because you guys made it so easy. Then it was the venue which we wanted somewhere close to the church. We live in the North Shore, which is also 45 minutes away from Newton, so having a place close to the church and the in between for guests that were coming from New York: The Union Street Restaurant was the perfect place just a short 5 minute drive.
Did you have any special family traditions that were incorporated into your day?
My boyfriend and I are Catholics, on his Cuban side he's had a Catholic upbringing including being a Cardinal Hayes Graduate, my family is very religious, my parents have always been members of the Catholic Church here in the US, as well as in the Dominican Republic. My father and a few of my uncles are members of the church choir, my cousin is one of the church education teachers at St. John's in Peabody, growing up my cousins and I were also members of the choir. We have always been involved in the Catholic Faith. Our tradition states that the Godmother dresses the baby before the ceremony, so with the running around since we all live a bit far the Godmother got Milena dressed in the church.
Did you have a celebration after the christening ceremony?
The luncheon was a Union Street Restaurant in Newton. We reserved the second floor loft for our event.
Was there a theme to your event?
There was really no theme, but everything was white and pink. We had a pink and white sweets table with all kinds of pink and white candy, cupcakes, cake pops and cookies. I had made a small white candle favor with a pink rosary for my guests. We had ordered a beautiful cake and placed white and pink fresh flowers on the tables. We used hydrangeas and roses.
How many family & friends celebrated with you?
We had about 65 guests including the kids.
Do you have any suggestions for other parents as they start planning their child's christening?
Everything for us went very smooth. Once you have the church and the venue set all you need is the christening gown and once I found your website it was a breeze from there. The hardest part was that I didn't know which gown to choose. It was between the Penelope, the Scarlett or the Jessica, but once I knew that I wanted it to be passed down, I thought the Penelope was the best choice.
Looking back, was there a favorite moment from the day?
It was all beautiful. When she was being Christened that was very touching for me that I cried. Having our friends and family and having them share this special day with us, I don't have words to explain my gratitude for that. To have them take the time and travel by car or plane to share this day with our daughter was beautiful. One thing that was extra special was when my daughter's Godfather gave her her gift. A beautiful card, cross and Rosary Blessed and signed by Pope Francis, that was touching in ways that I can't even explain. My daughter will have those precious gifts for the rest of her life and she will be able to pass along to her family. We wanted for her to be surrounded by our close friends and family and it turned out to be very special. It was a peaceful magical day. Milena looked like a princess!!
Thank you so much, Florangel, for sharing a peek into Milena's Christening Day!
